Tilcara or Purmamarca: choosing a base in Jujuy

Tilcara and Purmamarca are not competing to be the “best town”. They work differently as bases. Choose by looking at the next day’s visits and repeated travel rather than a generic list of advantages.

Choose Tilcara when the trip is spread across the Quebrada

Tilcara sits within the corridor of several villages and can simplify a trip divided between Maimará, Purmamarca and Humahuaca. It also deserves a day of its own. This does not make every transfer automatic: without a car, confirm each connection and the final return.

Choose Purmamarca when the village and RN52 matter most

Purmamarca makes sense when you want proper time in the village and when a Salinas Grandes outing is central to the trip. That does not make it the best base for every northern day. If you will repeatedly move towards Humahuaca, compare that travel time with a more central base.

For three days, compare the sequence before the hotel

If the plan is Purmamarca, Tilcara and Humahuaca over three days, one central base may reduce accommodation changes. If Salinas is the priority, staying in Purmamarca can organise that day better. If Hornocal is decisive, Humahuaca enters the base discussion. Pick outings before picking the base.

Without a car, terminal, station and final transfer matter more

Knowing that transport exists between two towns is not enough. Record where it leaves, where it drops you and how you reach the final activity. Tren Solar is an experience to confirm with its operator; we do not treat it as a substitute for a complete public transport network. Fewer changes and clearer returns can matter more than a small distance difference.

What to compare before booking

Check the exact address, access from your arrival point, food options at the time you will actually return, the first transfer of the following morning, total cost and cancellation terms. Jujuy360 does not rank hotels or towns by commission; the comparison is designed to reduce friction in the route.

Compare your destinations in the planner first; then choose Tilcara or Purmamarca as the base, and only then search for accommodation.

HumahuacaFor the town and the RP73 approach to Hornocal. The viewpoint ascent requires separate transport and return arrangements.

Without a car, check the departure stop, transfer to the accommodation and last return before comparing room rates. This table compares routes, not property availability.

Which base fits the following day’s route?

For Salinas, Purmamarca puts you at the RN52 approach; for visits along RN9, compare Tilcara against your actual stops. If Hornocal is the main goal, also consider Humahuaca. Without a car, the departure stop and agreed return matter alongside the accommodation location.
