Choose Tilcara when the trip is spread across the Quebrada

Tilcara sits within the corridor of several villages and can simplify a trip divided between Maimará, Purmamarca and Humahuaca. It also deserves a day of its own. This does not make every transfer automatic: without a car, confirm each connection and the final return.

Choose Purmamarca when the village and RN52 matter most

Purmamarca makes sense when you want proper time in the village and when a Salinas Grandes outing is central to the trip. That does not make it the best base for every northern day. If you will repeatedly move towards Humahuaca, compare that travel time with a more central base.

For three days, compare the sequence before the hotel

If the plan is Purmamarca, Tilcara and Humahuaca over three days, one central base may reduce accommodation changes. If Salinas is the priority, staying in Purmamarca can organise that day better. If Hornocal is decisive, Humahuaca enters the base discussion. Pick outings before picking the base.

Without a car, terminal, station and final transfer matter more

Knowing that transport exists between two towns is not enough. Record where it leaves, where it drops you and how you reach the final activity.
