Jujuy or Salta: where to stay and how to combine both
Salta and Jujuy are not interchangeable destinations, and you do not need to choose a winner. The useful decision depends on your number of days, the landscapes you want and how much repeated travel you are willing to accept.

Choose more nights in Jujuy when the Quebrada and Puna are the core
Purmamarca, Tilcara, Humahuaca, Salinas Grandes and Hornocal can make a Jujuy base much more efficient when those are your main goals. Match the base to the route: Purmamarca aligns with RN52 and Salinas, Tilcara distributes several Quebrada movements, and Humahuaca brings the Hornocal outing closer.
Give Salta its own time when Salta’s circuits matter
Salta city, Cafayate, the Calchaquí Valleys and other Salta experiences deserve days of their own. Flying into Salta can be a practical gateway, but it does not mean every night must remain there once the trip shifts north. Visit Argentina presents the two provinces as a natural combined northern journey.
Combine the provinces in blocks, not daily returns
Rather than crossing the provincial boundary every day, group the trip into a Salta block and a Jujuy block. With only a few days, reduce the number of goals. With five to seven days, combining both works better when each province gets real time and the itinerary keeps margin for arrival, departure and weather.
The useful question is not which province is prettier
Compare the arrival airport or terminal, the next morning’s first activity, the last transfer of the day, altitude, luggage and accommodation cancellation terms. A base that forces a long return every night can consume the time you hoped to save. Choose by logistics and experience rather than an artificial contest.
Shortlist the experiences you actually want in each province first; then choose one or two bases that reduce backtracking and confirm each transfer.
